Lion In Da Sun is owned and operated by two brothers, Matthew and Joshua Slayton. During the winter of 2005 we both decided it was time to leave Boston for a few months and try something new. Leaving respectable jobs at Harvard University and Sears we landed on St. John and at Maho Bay Camps in early June 2005. Initially we started working in their 4-hour work/stay program, but it only took a few weeks before we realized that staying a bit longer wouldn’t be such a bad idea. After spending an afternoon sailing on Allura we started to think about how little we
had used our business degrees and entrepreneurial skills in our professional career, and decided perhaps this was the right place to start thinking about our own business.

Countless hours were spent researching the idea of buying Lion In Da Sun and running it as a business, and just before September 2005 a business plan was developed. Our idea was simply to give customers an incredible experience on the water, while being a business we could feel proud of and enjoy working for.

After four months of securing financing and preparation we opened our doors and sent our first charter on December 1, 2005. We continued to live and work at Maho Bay while running the business out of our eco-tent until April when we realized working a full-time job while running your business can be a bit difficult.

There was an immense amount of knowledge learned (sometimes the hard and expensive way) in the first 6 months of running the boat. We quickly realized that the “island time” mentality can certainly take its toll on a new business. Simple things like setting up a telephone or opening a checking account took many weeks or even months!

The original idea for starting this business still rings true though – we’re in a place where we love living, while working for a business we are proud of and enjoy.

We certainly hope you’ll enjoy your time and experience with Lion In Da Sun, and look forward to being with you on the water soon.
