Representing Robert Lewis Stevenson’s model for his book Treasure Island, Norman Island holds two of the best snorkeling sites in all of the Virgin Islands. If snorkeling is your intention for your charter, this is one place you should ask your captain to take you. Known as the Caves, they deliver beautiful schools of fish and coral each and every time we visit. Not to mention the frightening caves themselves, which always add a little bit of allure to us optimistic treasure hunters. Take the underwater light off the boat and look for yourself deep inside the first cave

and see what you find. Different creatures live in the dark waters and are sometimes difficult to spot, but usually we will find the schools of Glassy Sweepers just inside the cave mouths. As Smuggler’s Cove was our favorite beach, the Indians are our favorite snorkeling location. With some of the largest coral heads and fauna around you will get to experience a location beautiful enough to scuba, but equally exciting to snorkel. Forty foot rock formations jut out of the water into the sky. They extend about forty feet down before they meet the ocean floor, creating a beautiful wall of coral and fish to explore. There is even an underwater tunnel swim-through for the more adventurous swimmers.

Norman Island is also home to a floating sailboat turned into a restaurant and bar called the “Willy T” named after William Thorton who was born on Jost Van Dyke but actually was the design architect for the United States Capital building! It has a reputation as a fun place to jump from the top bridge deck, and ladies are rewarded for accomplishing such a feat (sans bathing suit that is!).
